Recently chatting to a mate of mine, she was asking questions about my interests. This lead us to talking about quilting and more particularly quilts and coverlets. It was at this point she said coverlets? Aren’t they the same as quilts? I filled her in on the difference between the 2, but that got me thinking. There are countless people who take up quilting every year, and just like me when I started, discover there is a lot to learn.

So for folks new to quilting, thinking about beginning or merely plain curious, I have complied an outline about quilts and coverlets and what makes them different from each other.

Quilts

Quilts are what the majority are familiar with, I won’t say everybody because there is usually someone that is the exception to the rule, and most likely you have one or more quilts on your bed at the moment.

These come in a selection of patterns and styles. Firstly there are numerous types of quilt. These are usually cotton, polyester or duck or goose down quilts. Sometimes though quilters refer to quilt covers or designs stitched onto the quilt itself.

This suggests there are a spread of patterns, whether its a plain or single colour quilt, or printed and stitched patterns. There is no one single design or pattern that defines a quilt, but usually a single colour.

Quilts always use soft materials as they are going to be against your skin when you sleep, and let me tell you, no-one would like a rough or itchy quilt. These essentially go with ‘s over form ‘ as comfort takes case law over style when it comes to a duvet.

Coverlets

Coverlets are a more decorative covering usually for a day bed or a bed that is not in use, such as one of a child which has grown up and moved out.

They’re most commonly seen with a patchwork or stitched design pattern, frequently having embedding stitching forming part of the pattern.

Coverlets are generally utilized as a quilt as they’re really for decoration. It doesn’t have a cover and the patterns are usually stitched into the blanket itself. This also means that coverlets are made from a rougher or coarse material.

They generally stick to form over function, serving as display piece, instead of a functional quilt.

Hence I am hoping you have learned a bit about quilts and coverlets and if you are only starting out in the world of quilting – good luck!
