Substance abuse is the use of any substance to the extent that is causes physical, mental or emotional damage- either temporary or permanent. Abused substances don’t always mean illegal drugs such as marijuana or other illegal’s drugs, alcohol, over-the-counter medications, household chemicals can also become abused substances.
When families talk openly about dangerous substances, like alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and make their position is made clear on what is and is not acceptable you have then given them some boundaries.
A great way to start opening an avenue for discussion could be over dinner, games, while driving, and or when you see a group of people such as teenagers drinking and hanging out. When you ask how your child’s day was look them in the eye and really listen. Knowing who your child’s friends are and inviting them over will also help you to know what your kids might be involved in.
When you work into talking about substance abuse make sure to set clear expectations for their behavior and be consistent in your training and discipline. Talk to them about the dangers of substance use and abuse and let them know you are setting guidelines because you love them. Remember to also encourage and praise them when they do well.
Abuse of prescription drugs come into play in many ways. Others take or share relatives’ prescription medications without knowing what effects they might have on the body. Some people who have one prescription may go to several different doctors for prescriptions, not telling any one doctor about their other medications. Another easy way a person might start with abusing their medication would be to simply take more than the doctor prescribed.
Not your child? Many parents think their child would never take “drugs” however this is not true, no child or adult is exempt from the pressures of life, in fact most Adults, as well as children, abuse drugs for one reason – freedom, freedom from insecurities, fear, rules, problems, pain and sometimes as dumb as it sounds- boredom. In reality when some one becomes addicted they actually become a slave to the drug.
Freedom from our problems is the number one reason adults, teens and children abuse drugs. They are searching for a freedom from fear, rules, pain and sometime boredom. Unfortunately, what they also become are slaves to something more powerful than themselves and ultimately their freedom is taken away to addiction.
